The Second Time Around

The Second Time Around

Love is lovelier the second time around,
Just as wonderful with both feet on the ground;
It's that second time you hear your love song sung,
Makes you think perhaps that love, like youth, is wasted on the young.
— Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn

n this issue, we have what amounts to two “Second Time Arounds.” The first is a new finding for cinnamon, suggesting that that its ability to control blood sugar may enable one, in addition to living healthier, to live longer as well. The second “Second” is new knowledge about vitamin D that strongly suggests a procession of unexpected benefits from this long-recognized and highly valued vitamin. These include enhanced cognition, antidepressant benefits, reduced brain degradation, enhanced locomotor function, improved muscle function, healthier heart function, and anticancer effects, along with an improved sense of well-being, more happiness, and—conjecturally—even more love.

Back to the song lyrics . . .

There are those who’ll bet love comes but once, and yet
I’m oh, so glad we met the second time around.

Here’s to meeting health-bearing nutrients the second time around, and more love, more happiness and, yes, more youth.
